To Christmas... and Beyond!

As we reach a crest in the calender hill climb and prepare ourselves for the crazy downward run to Christmas and New Year, I'll try and do a few more posts before I leave. Pictures from rides very welcome! Different angles, detail of bikes, new clothing, tool kits all look good. Email me photos, top tips, maps and if people want to review or preview a ride, just email me a paragraph or so and I'll post them on the blog while I'm away.

I'm going to try and get to a gym when I can and if I have access to a bike (unlikely) I'll try and get out but I'm preparing myself for a monumental slump in fitness over the next few weeks as well as a significant beefing up. My plan for the coming year is going to involve about a month of training just to pick up from where I left off and shed my sausage roll/chicken curry and parathas/Guinness spare tyre. After that, as well as the midweek quickies, I want to do a long ride every Sunday and once a month do it on the Saturday as well, increasing the distance by about 10km each month... for example:

January sundays: 30-40km

last weekend in Jan sat and sun: 30-40km

February Sundays: 40-50km

last weekend in Feb sat and sun 40-50km

March Sundays 50-60km

last weekend in March sat and sun 50-60km

April Sundays 60-70km

last weekend in April sat and sun 60-70km

May Sundays 70-80km

last weekend in May sat and sun 70-80km

June Sundays 80-90km

last weekend in June sat and sun 80-90km

and maybe remain at this level, doubling up at the end of July, until August. That way, if people need to catch up to this level they have a few weeks in hand to do it.

This means that we will have a bit of experience doing long rides 2 days in a row. Let me know what you think.  I have been checking out a few longer routes including a 60km ride to Nudgee Beach which looks very do-able. When we need even longer distances we can stretch that all the way up to and around Boondall Wetlands. Then there's one which follows the SE Freeway Bikeway up the very looooong hill at Mount Gravatt just after Gaza Road. There is also a bikeway on the Western Freeway which we can explore.

Here's Kirsty, Bron, Michelle and Emma on their 44km ride up to Shaw Park and back yesterday morning.
Looking good, girls! (and Michelle definitely doesn't look like a tourist!)
