Story Bridge, Eastern Side

Cate and I rode to Dockside, then under the Story Bridge to go along the Western side but the footpath was closed so we hit the underpass and crossed on the Eastern side where there is a nifty little bike path to get you back down to the Riverside bike path.

I haven't quite got the knack of the self portrait yet. I look a bit "special"

Checking my new red tires rrrrrrRRRrrow

Here's Cate with a nice view in the background...

Cate's ride today:

This means if we ride to Dockside we don't have to ride the same way back. Fabbo.

All up: 18.26km

Tomorrow we are meeting at 8am on the corner of Hardgrave/Victoria and I shall be sporting my new tires.... Look out!

Reverse loop - getting up Dornoch...

Last Thursday's riders: Cara, Jacque, Cate, Michelle
Last Thursday's route: meeting at Hardgrave/Victoria. Hardgrave, Dornoch, Gladstone, Green Bridge, St Lucia, Coro Drive, Bicentennial bikeway, Go between, home.

We made it! (well... we made it up Dornoch)

Here's me...

And here's Jacque in her signature socks...

Unfortunately didn't quite make it up Hiron Street in St. Lucia as we were chatting and not realising the hill was quite so challenging. Next time!

Katina'a ride today...

Katina has been exploring on Wednesday mornings... this is today's route:

From Katina:
It started off out to the uni via Coro drive and over the green bridge but instead of along Gladstone, i crossed at the lights to Dutton Pk achool, then along Park Road which leads to the expressway bike path. Then along it (north) to Kangaroo Point bikeway and around Kangaroo Point to Dockside. Then at Ferry Rd you can get onto the Story Bridge and ride across it. At the other side you go right and down a path which gets you to the riverside path which leads to the gardens and then back home. It took me 1hr45 (with getting slightly lost!) Nice little detour. Almost all bike path and quiet streets.

That's 28.77 kms according to my painstaking calculations.

I wanna do this!

Bron takes on the mini river loop with Kirsty and Cate...

Bron is that Cody going for a ride with you? Oooh la la!

Ride number 7 - review

Weather: crisp, cloudless sunshine. A bit chilly in the shade at the start.
Riders: Kirsty, Michelle, Cara, Jacque B, Jacqui W, Celia and Bron - hooray! Bron's inaugural ride!

Route: Starting at Orleigh Park, heading along the river all the way to dockside, through some back streets to Mowbray Park. Turn around and come back to where the big mirror ball is, coffee in Little Stanley Street, over the Goodwill Bridge, along the northern bikeway to Regatta, back to and over the Go Between Bridge, along the river and home.

So the 18.01miles (a sniff under 29kms) was the route that I did. Kirsty adds a bit on at the end for her hike up Hoogley. Michelle and Bron take off 4.5kms, Jacqui W and Celia probably take off about 5kms if you came back via South Bank and then Jacque B... I don't know where your work is and you also did the Gladstone Road bit before we even started so... erm... the website is Map My Ride if you want to work it out :-).

It was a massive turn out this morning with SEVEN riders. Bron was sporting some rather fetching "Mellow Yellow" frisbee garb. It reminded me that one day we'll have our own team jersey and well won't we look fab? Sod just wearing it for the ride, I reckon we should look into it earlier so we can ride around in style...

South Bank was a bit crowded but once we got past the hoards it was smooth riding, passing the rock climbers on Kangaroo Point and plenty of people out for their morning walk. After we reached the end of the path, Kirsty had to lead us over to Mowbray Park. The hills were a bit of a shock to the system and Kirsty, who had flown ahead, stopped for us half way up a hill. I don't think she'll do that again! So we have the Kangaroo Point undulations now as well as the St. Lucia ones.

Our furthest point was the middle of Mowbray Park. Kirsty said she's going to investigate the path during the week as it leads down to Norman Creek. A possible route for next week perhaps?

Back we went to the big Mirror Ball for a few shots. .. come on Bron and Jacqui W with the power air-punches! Yeah!!

Then a lovely lady offered to take our photo... which was a bit handy. I think this one might have to be our new team photo on the RTCC website. I thought it was dark in the viewfinder but it was fine.

This was the one with the most of Jacque Boon in it.

There was an agreement that we need a far more informed choice when it comes to coffee places. We stopped at this place in Little Stanley Street and the service was a bit rushed.. and the coffee was ok but nothing special and they sort of messed up the order a little bit.

fig. 1. The cappucino nobody ordered

Who is talking? apparently nobody... but it was a very comfortable silence.

Here's Jacque enjoying her latte. It had been a long time coming actually I think she mentioned coffee pretty early on in the ride... possibly not long after we started...

We need that lovely VW van to come back - I haven't seen it for weeks! So it's everyone's homework to investigate nice places to have coffee on a Sunday morning.

Like the petals of a frangipani flower in spring, we fanned out in separate directions. Jacque B went to WORK, Jacqui W and Celia headed straight back to West End and the rest of us headed over the Goodwill Bridge and along the bicentennial bikeway towards Regatta. Kirsty was starting to break away from the pack almost immediately so I started chasing her. She was a speck in the distance all the way  to Regatta and I never caught up.

So I am using the tree behind as a visual analogy for Kirsty's bike riding prowess. It's difficult to get them both in focus but I think you can pretty much make out that it is about to bloom Watch this space.

Anyway we were hanging around for a while before we twigged that Bron and Michelle must've gone over the Go Between. No sooner had we decided this, we looked across the river and there they were! Having that mid-ride coffee had meant it was time to head home busting busting. We called, whistled and got their attention for a cross-river wave. That was our cue to get going!

As is always the way, it seems much faster on the return. I hardly remember the ride back but I did notice that we chatted normally going up the hill that leads up towards the sailing club. This time a few weeks ago I would have been breathing a lot heavier. It's amazing how far we have come in a few short weeks.

Thursday morning I am riding the loop again. I'm thinking about doing it backwards so going uphill on Dornoch if anyone wants to join me. Leaving from Victoria/Hardgrave corner at around 8.25am

Kirsty seems to be riding every day so contact her if you want to go exploring with her during the week.

Another nice long ride next Sunday ... details TBA. Have a great week xx

Mini River Loop - getting easier!

Riders: Kirsty, Jacque B, Cara and Michelle.

We met at Victoria/Hardgrave Rd corner although Jacque had come from home so had completed the Gladstone Rd hill before we even started!

This was my second time and I found it a lot better. It really helps when you know where the hills are and how long they're going to be. Michelle and Kirsty were sporting new cycling shorts complete with padded undercarriage. Comfy Arses R Us!

Jacque was in her lovely pink and black stripey socks which I think added a very tongue-in-cheek attitude to her other more serious cycling garb. Short rest stops at Regatta and St. Lucia. Jacque peeled off and went home after the bridge having done her full circuit. We stopped for another rest after arriving on Gladstone Road and then again at the top of the hill.

These shots were after the Green Bridge when we discussed the merits of Kirsty and Michelle's new cycling shorts. Hidden away by their lovely floaty dresses.

Ride number 7 preview...

Kirsty rode this route this morning:

And some piccies:

Somewhere just past Dockside, I think

Mowbray Park - time to turn around!

Regatta - time to head home.

It's about 27km! I say we let her take us on it again on Sunday. Who's up for it?

Ride number 6 - Kirsty leads the way!

Kirsty took charge on yesterday, leading Michelle, Cate and Jacqui around the mini river loop. Having only done it once so far, I am feeling extremely out of the loop and am very much looking forward to Thursday to get my Gladstone Road Groove on.

Congratulations, Cate, on doing this route for the first time. Those hills are tough!

Michelle and Kirsty are looking suspiciously white. I think this route isn't challenging enough for them any more.

Kirsty rides again: 23.7kms!

As if we weren't feeling slack enough, Kirsty has sent me through some more photos and details of her route this morning with Michelle joining her at the Story Bridge. It's 23.7kms which is the biggest one yet! Hats off.

don't ask me where 4 and 5 are on this map... they should be at south bank and kangaroo point respectively.

here's Kirsty at Kangaroo Point:

Excellent. Nice background. I think this was where we met our jogger friend Michele..right?

Fabbo! xxx

Gladstone Road: tick.

Kirsty has done the loop again and this time she's hooked up with Michelle and Jacqui Boon. Here's some snaps:

Aw look. I don't think you could get cheesier grins. You look great!

Post undulations and still smiling!

They made it up Gladstone road. No stopping. That got the blood flowing!

Can't wait to get back out there with you! See you either next Thursday morning or the following Sunday xxx

Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

...no, it's Kirsty on her new bike!!! No more thick tyres and small wheels. That saddle looks nice and skinny, Kirsty. You might have to invest in some new bike shorts to go with it.

Ride 5 review...

Despite fathers' day commitments and previous night shenanigans, there was a very respectable turnout on Saturday for Ride #5.

Attendees: 5: Kirsty, Cate, Cara, Michelle. Jacqui Boon.

Yes! Jacqui Boon is back and she joined us for her first ride, looking hot in her pink stripey socks. Everyone got up Ganges Street...

Including Cate who even managed to re-attach her chain half way (here are her black fingers!)

We accosted a passer-by to take out photo at Regatta...

Michelle and I went hell for leather along the bikeway towards the Goodwill Bridge so when we got there I had a moment to take a couple of tender bike shots...

Michelle's bike even has a name - Tutta Velocita - which means All Speed in Italian if my online translator is anything to go by. Molto Bene. Here's Kirsty looking lovely:

She is starting to make us look slack completing her second mini-river-loop this morning:

Apparently, it was hard going today but... she made it! Congratulations Kirsty!

Unfortunately I can't make the rides I was hoping to do this Thursday and Sunday. My next ride will be on Thursday 13th September doing the mini river loop followed by the Sunday ride which I haven't decided quite yet. Any suggestions for that one are welcome. Happy riding!!

Kirsty's first riverloop

Kirsty tackled the mini river loop this morning and completed it! Big back slaps and high fives all round. And as you can see she even managed to take some pictures!:

Entitled "undulating". Ha! .... must have been deepest darkest St. Lucia...

At the Green Bridge and a bit of a stroll

And Gladstone Road - yay!!!

Next time we want you to take a photo while you're riding down Dornoch Terrace at 50km/h.
